Asghar Farhadi vs Masihzadeh

Asghar Farhadi. Famous Director of Iranian Cinema. He has made critically acclaimed films like 'The Salesman' and 'A Separation'. His new film 'A Hero' premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and won the Grand Jury Prize there. Now he is in trouble because of the same film. A student of Asghar filed a case against him. He said that Asghar stole the story of his film 'A Hero' from his 2018 documentary 'All Winners All Losers'. The director of the documentary, Masihzadeh, has sued Asghar for plagiarism.

Asghar Farhadi vs Masihzadeh

The matter reached the court of Tehran, the court also found Asghar guilty. The court held that Asghar infringed the copyright of Messiahzadeh, and also did not credit Messiahzadeh. The decision of the court cannot be appealed. Now the second judge will decide the sentence of Farhadi. Either he can be asked to hand over all the earnings from the film to Christzadeh, or else he can be sent to jail.

'A Hero' is the story of a divorced father, who comes out of dater's prison. Those who are unable to pay their debts, are sent to the debtor's prison as a punishment. After coming out the man finds a bag full of gold coins. He feels like stealing it and paying off all my debts. But he decides to return it, so that he can clear his image among the people. 'A Hero' also got a nomination in the category of Best International Film at the 94th Academy Awards.

Directed by Messiahzadeh, 'All Winners All Losers' is based on a man named Shokri. Who comes out of dater's prison. He finds a bag full of money. His mind tells him to keep the money, but still he tries to find the real owner of the bag. Masihzadeh uploaded the documentary to his YouTube channel, where you can watch it. He claimed that he pitched the story of Shokri during a documentary filmmaking class in 2014. Asghar was present in that class. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Masihzadeh said that his idea was very much liked by Asghar.

The film was completed and was screened at the Iranian Film Festival in 2018. Messiahzadeh says that in 2019, Asghar called her to his office and got her signed on a document. It was written in the document that the idea of 'All Winners All Losers' was of Asghar. According to Christzadeh, he signed that document. She says that Asghar Farhadi is a big name in Iranian cinema, so she felt pressured to sign. Messiahzadeh sued Farhadi for not being given credit for the story and research of 'A Hero'. In response, Farhadi sued him for defamation. Farhadi's attorney said the idea had no copyright, and that the document signed by Christzadeh had no legal value. Also added that the story of Shokri was already in the public domain before the 2014 workshop.

Messiahzadeh's reply was that the national media never covered Shokri's story, and that it was only his research. According to a report published in The Hollywood Reporter, the court dismissed Farhadi's defamation case. This was done due to lack of evidence. As soon as Farhadi's defamation case was rejected, Christzadeh sued him for plagiarism.

The court found Farhadi guilty. 'A Hero' has so far collected 2.5 million dollars in theaters around the world. It has not been released in many countries yet, like in India, the film will open in theaters on 08 April. If all goes bad for Farhadi, he will have to hand over the theater collection of 'A Hero' as well as the proceeds from the online rights to Messiahzadeh.
